Colour and Pigment Distribution in Ornamental Plants : IV. Colour Distribution in Carnation Cultivars

Colour and Pigment Distribution in Ornamental Plants. IV. Colour Distribution in Carnation Cultivars. M. YOKOI, Faculty of Horticulture, Chiba University, Matsudo, Japan. Tech. Bull. Fac. Hort. Chiba Univ. No.21: 37-43, 1973. Colour distribution in 78 carnation cultivars was examined colorimetrically, spectrophotometrically and visually. The colours of carnation cultivars in terms of Hunter colour values were distributed over the ranges from yellow-green to red-purple in the Hunter diagram. This indicates that no flower colours of true green, blue and purple are found in the modern cultivars. Eight patterns of the reflectance spectrum of carnation flowers were observed in this study and from this curve pattern, the colour of flowers can be easily distinguished. The objective colour evaluation as reported in this work will be useful for not only describing flower colour in breeding work but also recording environmental effects on flower colour quality.
